Our Adoption Process

Pawsitive Tails is dedicated to matching the needs and personality of our dogs with your family. We are not in a hurry to adopt out our dogs; we want to make sure the match is perfect for everyone. All of the dogs in our rescue live in foster homes with both the human and furry members of our families.

01

Find your new best friend

Browse our list of dogs in the Find A Dog page. If the dog’s profile has a message that says “On Hold ”, that means they have an approved adopter and we are only taking backup applications.

02

Submit an adoption application

Click on the “Apply to Adopt” button at the bottom of your favorite dog’s profile or at the button below to start your application process. Completely fill out the application; partially entered applications will not be accepted. If you rent, please contact your landlord before filling out the application to find out their pet restrictions and requirements. After we receive your application, we will speak to your personal references and your vet reference. Your information will then be passed to the foster parent of the dog that you are interested in.

03

Schedule a meet and greet

Meet and greets are scheduled in the order in which we receive the applications for a specific dog. This does not mean that we adopt on a “first come first serve” basis. Unless an approved adopter backs out, a meet and greet will not be scheduled with additional applicants for that specific dog. We do welcome backup applications.

The foster parent will contact you to set up a meet and greet. If all goes well for both parties, a volunteer will call you to schedule a home visit. If at that time everyone, including the dog is comfortable with the visit, the adoption can take place.

04

Submit your adoption fee

We ask for a minimum adoption donation to help us cover transportation, veterinary and general care expenses incurred. All of our dogs are altered, up to date on age appropriate vaccines, dewormed, microchipped, heartworm tested (age appropriate) and are already receiving heartworm and flea and tick prevention before being adopted.
